Teak THE hardwood.
Teak is a dense-grained hardwood indigenous to Indonesia.  Tectona grandis is a deciduous hardwood tree indigenous to the dry, hilly terrains of Indonesia and Southeast Asia.  Teak is extremely dense-grained and highly resistant to rot, warping, shrinkage and swelling.  Its high natural oil content acts as a natural preservative to the wood so it can be left outdoors for decades.

Teak is beautiful and ages gracefully.
Over time and exposed to the natural elements, teak develops a silvery gray patina that can be left in its natural state or revived to a warm honey glow with a light sanding or the application of a little teak oil.

Teak is perfect for outdoor garden furniture since it is very smooth to the touch and does not splinter. It maintains a very neutral temperature when compared to plastic or metal furniture and has a faint, pleasant aromatic smell.

Well made teak wood outdoor furniture has a classic design with clean architectural lines and timeless style.  This is an important attribute since the furniture will be with you for many years to come.

Teak is stunning in or out of the home.
Many of the pieces in our collection can be used inside the home as well as outside.  Teak takes on a different characteristic when indoors.  If teak furniture is used indoors, away from a lot of natural sunlight, it will gradually become a darker shade of honey brown.  Check out our Deep Seating Collection which is the perfect compliment to any indoor living space.

Our teak is environmentally friendly.
Our furniture is made from harvested trees grown on plantations which are governed by practices managed and controlled by PT Perum Perhutani, an Indonesian government agency.  This agency operates under strict policies which regulate the number and size of trees which can be felled, as well as the number of trees which are replanted.  They are responsible for preserving this natural resource for generations to come.

Tectona grandis is said to be indigenous to India, Burma, Thailand, Indochina and Java Indonesia.  It has been extensively planted for timber and for ornamental purposes within its native region and throughout the tropical regions of the world, including East and West Africa, Cuba, the Caribbean, and parts of South America.

Tectona grandis is not from tropical rain forests as it cannot thrive in these regions.  It is a deciduous tree which grows particularly well in the dry, hilly terrain typical of plantation forests in Southeast Asia.

Our teak is from Java which has very large teak plantations which were first planted by the Dutch in the early 1800's.  There are less expensive teak products out on the market today crafted from “gray market" trees culled illegally from non-regenerating resources. We ask that you not support these companies for obvious reasons.

Also consider the fact that it is significantly more energy efficient to manufacture outdoor teak garden furniture than its metal or plastic counterparts and it is a natural material producing less fabricated waste in our overburdened landfills.

Our teak furniture will arrive in its natural state – fine sanded.
When you receive your teak it will be in its natural state which is a honey/brown color and can often appear to be polished due to the natural oil occurring in the wood.  You should wipe your furniture with a damp cloth to remove any dust from manufacturing.  The oil on the surface will evaporate after a few days outdoors.  It is the oil that remains below the surface that gives the wood its durability.  Some of these oils may bleed out following the first few rainfalls, and initially, you will want to bring your cushions in when the furniture is wet. Once the furniture has begun to form the silver-grey patina, it is no longer necessary to bring the cushions indoors.

If you want to preserve the original appearance of your teak furniture you must use a teak protector.  If you want to remove the silver-grey color and bring your furniture back to the original golden brown color, we recommend using a teak cleaner.  This again is only to be used if you want to remove the silver-grey patina.  After using the teak cleaner, you must use a teak protector seasonally to maintain the golden brown color.  It is not necessary to use the cleaner on a new piece of furniture.

Teak is extremely durable.
Teak is naturally resistant to rot caused by fungal decay.  The high level of resinous oil present in the timber acts as a natural insect repellent making teak highly resistant to termites and other wood boring insects.

Teak has incomparable value.
Outdoor teak patio furniture is one of the best values available in home furnishings due to its durability and classic design.  Consider the cost of a fine quality teak dining set over the number of years of expected use and you will find that our outdoor teak garden furniture cost is nominal.

Our furniture is made with only the highest grade materials.
All of the teak used in our furniture is kiln-dried, first grade, plantation grown Tectona Grandis from legal sources in Indonesia.  Why should teak furniture be kiln-dried?  Freshly felled teak has about 40% moisture content.  If your patio furniture is not made form kiln-dried teak, it could dry out and crack due to exposure.  All of our joints are old-fashioned mortise and tenon with teak dowel inserts.  A mortise is a squared hole and a tenon is a squared finger that fits into the mortise.  Only marine grade brass and stainless steel fittings our used in our furniture.  At Outdoor Teak Store® our furniture is manufactured to the highest standards.
